This collection of work explores my interest in cubism, modernism and surrealism as an overall style of painting. But it also shows the influence of the underground comix movement, especially the work of the artists associated with Zap Comix. This synergistic style was formed during my last two years of college,(1980-81) through a series of sketchbooks that I shared with my good friend Robert Burnett. Bob and I found ourselves to be instant friends, and Bob's artwork and creative sensibilities had as big an impact on my work as anything else I had experienced. We would take turns using the sketchbook, as well as having "jam session" pages, like the artists in Zap Comix would do. Over a two year period we created four or five of these collaborative sketchbooks. These works are a direct outgrowth of that period.
I also have to recognize the influence of three artists from my days at Acme Art Company in Columbus,Ohio. Charles Wince, Paul Volker, and James Beoddy. They all had a big impact during my early days of becoming a "showing" artist.
